Darkness can seep into our lives in many ways, regardless of the season or the time of year. And despite the festivity that is inherently part of preparing for Christmas, darkness – as a metaphor and as a lack of light – for many, pervades.

Some congregations now include a “Blue Christmas” service, or a service of reflection and lament in the third week of Advent. Music in these settings acknowledges the difficulties of the season and allows the for the painful moments to be recognized. Sometimes as we weep and wait together, we find strength. Sometimes, waiting in darkness becomes a womb of incubation. Always, darkness requires our patience and perseverance.

The playlist this week includes music about darkness and light, waiting and mystery.
