I spent an afternoon this past week with Leonard Sweet and the students in the current cohort of Portland Seminary’s DMin program. The assignment they were given for the last hour of class was to tell the big Story (from 1:1 to the maps) using one of the key first images in the scriptures: dirt, water, or wind/breath. These images are rich in depth and meaning, connecting the story elements in amazing ways. Since I had already begun Ordinary Time last week with a playlist of “ocean” music, I thought I might try to create a series of playlists on these three images, continuing this week with water.
The links include a handful of arrangements of the spiritual “Wade in the Water.” This song reminds us of some of the key “wading” parts of the story: Moses and the Israelites walking through the Red Sea, the healing of Naaman’s skin disease, John and Jesus wading in the Jordan, and perhaps even Jesus’ proclamation that streams of living water will flow from those who believe (now that’s wading!).
Can you think of other scripture stories connected to the idea of wading in the water?
I had trouble adding some of these tracks to the playlist, so they are linked separately. Sam Cooke Tori Sparks Blind Boys of Alabama Deeper Dimension ST#117 – The Waters
